In March, Phillips was indicted and faced charges of being an accessory to first-degree murder and aggravated arson.
Shanyka Phillips, who recently changed her plea to guilty, faced a harrowing court experience before receiving her sentence. She has been sentenced to four years on two counts, to be served concurrently. Phillips had played a role in assisting her boyfriend in escaping from a tragic house fire that claimed the lives of his three children in New Orleans East last October.
In March, Phillips faced an indictment and was charged with the crimes of being an accessory to first-degree murder and committing aggravated arson.
During the sentencing, Alyssa Curtis from WWL Louisiana reported that Phillips expressed her remorse and deep regret for her actions.
According to Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, during the indictment of Phillips, it was revealed that she had been present at the scene of the arson alongside defendant Washington. Multiple witnesses observed her at the crime scene as Washington was fleeing.
Williams expressed his shock and disbelief at the actions of Washington, stating, “After fleeing the scene, Washington later drove to the Westbank where Phillips, then again, was present – picked him up, drove him away with the knowledge of what he’d just done. There are no words for something this odious.”
Washington pleaded guilty to murder charges and is currently serving a life sentence in prison.
