Police reported a fatal shooting incident at Randall’s Island migrant relief center early Monday morning, resulting in the death of a woman and injuries to two other individuals.
Around 3:30 a.m., gunshots were fired at Field 71 under the Triborough Bridge, leading to a citywide manhunt by the NYPD for two suspects.
According to the police, two individuals were wounded in the incident. One of them was a 32-year-old man who sustained a gunshot wound to the throat, while the other was a 31-year-old woman who was shot in the back.
The individuals were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem and were reported to be in stable condition.
According to the authorities, two male suspects are being sought by the NYPD. One of the suspects is reported to have fled the scene in a car bearing New Mexico plates, while the other made his escape on a moped.
The authorities have not yet confirmed whether the individuals affected by the incident were residing at the Randall’s Island complex. This particular complex serves as the primary shelter for asylum seekers in the city and provides accommodation to approximately 3,000 people in tented areas.
In March, due to previous instances of violence and other concerns at the complex, a nightly curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. was put in place at the shelter.
