An off-duty police officer was discovered lying in a pool of blood after he took his own life with a fatal gunshot wound inside an apartment in Upper Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, according to sources.
An NYPD officer from the 30th Precinct in Hamilton Heights, identified as Gregory J. Purvis by his colleagues on social media, parked his car near an apartment building on West 186th Street in Fort George before entering, according to police sources.
According to sources, the officer’s partner went to the scene later as they had not received any communication from the officer for a while.
As he arrived, he glanced through a window and caught sight of the officer sprawled on the floor.
Police officers stormed into the room and discovered the injured officer with a gunshot wound to the head, according to sources.
A gun was also found at the scene.
Heartbroken police officers expressed their condolences following his passing.
The Bronx chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association expressed its heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends, and colleagues of PO Gregory J. Purvis from the 30th Precinct. In a Facebook post, they conveyed their deepest condolences following the tragic news of his untimely passing on 08/20/2024 due to suicide.
“Mental health challenges are a reality, and it is crucial for us to stand together and provide support during these tough times,” stated the post. “If you or someone you are acquainted with is going through a difficult phase, don’t hesitate to seek help – assistance is always within reach.”
“Officer Purvis, may you rest in peace,” the message read. “We will never forget your unwavering service and commitment.”
On LinkedIn, Michael A. Montes, emergency management director from Mount Vernon, New York, expressed his grief over Purvis’ passing.
“In times like these, it is crucial to remember the significance of reaching out and providing support to one another,” he expressed. “If you or someone you are acquainted with is going through a difficult time, I urge you to seek the necessary help and assistance.”
