The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is currently investigating a police shooting incident in Newark. The incident resulted in one man being critically injured, while another individual was taken into custody.
Around 8:30 p.m. on Monday night, a surveillance video captured the moment when a police cruiser pulled up to an SUV parked at Clinton Place near Hawthorne Avenue in Newark. Authorities have confirmed that the SUV was stolen from Connecticut.
Two police officers approached the vehicle and apprehended a man seated in the passenger seat, escorting him away. Meanwhile, as they were arresting the passenger, another individual swiftly entered the vehicle and assumed control of the steering wheel. In an attempt to thwart the man’s escape, one of the officers engaged in a physical altercation with him. The vehicle abruptly surged backward and then forward, colliding with the police cruiser. The impact propelled the cruiser onto the sidewalk and into the school building, finally coming to a halt against a utility pole.
The driver was hit by a bullet fired by an officer, as stated by the attorney general’s office.
“I heard two gunshots followed by a loud crash. The scene was filled with chaos,” recounted Sharon Redding. She continued, “The police informed us that the car involved was stolen. Suddenly, someone was shot, and we witnessed the officers rushing to provide medical assistance to a young man.”
EMS responded to the scene where medical gloves and gauze were scattered on the street. The suspect was swiftly transported to University Hospital in critical condition. At this time, authorities have not disclosed his identity.
Both officers received medical treatment for minor injuries and were subsequently released.
The suspects are from Queens, according to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
“This is a tragic situation for everyone involved. When an incident like this occurs, it has a profound impact on all individuals affected and sends shockwaves throughout the community. Our primary goal will be to offer support, solace, and aid in the healing process for those affected, while also taking measures to prevent any further unlawful actions that may lead to similar incidents,” Baraka expressed.
The incident has left neighbors feeling unsettled, although it comes as no surprise to them.
Redding, who resides in the vicinity of Highway 78, frequently witnesses the occurrence of stolen vehicles passing through the area.
Another participant expressed concern about the lack of guidance, particularly in this area.
The attorney general’s office is currently investigating all incidents that involve serious injury or death during encounters with law enforcement.
