Eastern Iowa braces for severe thunderstorms and extreme heat this afternoon and evening, as the National Weather Service issued a slight risk for severe weather. Residents are being warned of possible damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain, with the potential for isolated tornadoes. The risk of tornadoes remains uncertain, but residents are advised to take necessary precautions.
The National Weather Service reports that the severity of storms could be impacted by cloud cover. It is observed that if clouds continue into the morning, the chances of severe weather decrease.
But, more thunderstorms are expected overnight, with the main threats being strong winds and large hail. It is advisable for residents to have multiple methods to receive warnings, particularly if they are asleep during the night.
As we move into the upcoming days, the heat index is expected to rise rapidly, with some areas experiencing temperatures as high as 100 degrees.
Among the cities that will feel the brunt of this heat wave are Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Dubuque. The National Weather Service has cautioned residents to take preventive measures against the heat, such as drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light-colored clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
