Authorities in Bristol are currently searching for a man who has left behind two suitcases that are suspected to contain human remains near the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Late on Wednesday night, authorities received reports of a suspicious man on the bridge, prompting officers to investigate.
Within 10 minutes of their arrival at the scene, the man had disappeared, leaving behind a suitcase. Avon and Somerset Police reported that they found another suitcase in close proximity shortly after.
According to Acting Bristol Commander Vicks Hayward-Melen, the top priority right now is to locate the man and determine the identity of the human remains.
Officers on the ground, with the assistance of the National Police Air Service and HM Coastguard, swiftly conducted a thorough search of the area upon discovering the findings, according to her statement.
Forensic investigators are currently at the scene as officers continue their ongoing searches, resulting in a significant police cordon set up in the area.
According to a social media post by its operators, the Clifton Suspension Bridge and its visitor centre have been closed due to ongoing police activity.
At 7.25am today, a message was posted on the X account of Clifton Suspension Bridge, stating that the bridge and visitor centre will remain closed all day (11th July) to all traffic and pedestrians due to a police incident.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.”
According to Commander Hayward-Melen, the recent incident is quite alarming and it is understandable that our communities are worried about it.
“Our major crime investigation team is leading the investigation, and we have enlisted the help of specialist officers and staff from various departments within our organisation.”
Finding the individual who transported the suitcases to the bridge, determining the identity of the deceased, and notifying their loved ones are currently our top priorities.
“Our team of specialized officers is prepared to offer the necessary support to individuals in need.”
According to her statement, the bridge is under inspection by expert crime scene investigators and will remain closed until the investigation is completed.
“Later today, a forensic post mortem examination will be conducted.”
Police officers have stepped up their presence in the area, and if anyone has any concerns, they are urged to approach one of the officers. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact them.
Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a Victorian engineer, designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which is now a Grade I listed landmark.
