An Iowa man was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of an Eldora woman, even though he was prohibited from contacting her by a protective order.
Nathan Bahr, 30, was convicted guilty on July 11 of first-degree murder by a Hardin County jury. When Bahr is sentenced on September 6, he will be facing an obligatory life sentence without the possibility of release.
Court documents state that on May 26, 2023, Bahr shot and killed Desiree Folsom, 25, in her Eldora residence. That occurred just one day after she filed for a protective order against him because he had mistreated her.
After leaving Iowa, Bahr was apprehended in Arizona three days later. He was sent to Iowa for prosecution. Bahr had never been arrested before, despite Folsom’s accusations of abuse, and he wasn’t in police custody on the day of the murder.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, intimate partners, either past or present, account for half of the deaths of female homicide victims. Furthermore, despite federal law preventing people convicted of domestic abuse or under protection orders from obtaining firearms, the Journal of Legislation, Medicine, & Ethics discovered that over half of homicides due to domestic violence involve firearms.
