In reaction to the storms and flooding, the state has declared Chickasaw and Wright counties to be under a state of disaster.
The proclamation issued by Governor Kim Reynolds will mobilize state resources, including the Disaster Case Advocacy Program and the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program, to address and mitigate the aftermath of the extreme weather that occurred on July 4th and beyond.
Grants are available for households with earnings up to 200 percent of the federal poverty threshold through the Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program. Grants are provided for replacing food or clothing, fixing up a car or house, and paying for short-term lodging. In order to be reimbursed for storm recovery costs, original receipts must be presented. The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management website, https://homelandsecurity.iowa.gov/assistance, has the grant application and instructions. After the proclamation date, prospective applicants have 45 days to file a claim.
The Iowa Individual Assistance Grant Program’s grant amount rose from $5,000 to $7,000 as of July 1. There is no go back for this increment.
Serious needs pertaining to hardship, injury, or unfavorable circumstances caused by disasters are addressed by the Disaster Case Advocacy Program. In addition to assisting clients in developing a catastrophe recovery plan, disaster case advocates often offer direction, counsel, and resource or service referrals. The program terminates 180 days from the governor’s proclamation date and has no income eligibility conditions.
