CHICAGO – Governor JB Pritzker has signed a new law that simplifies the process of obtaining a state ID card for individuals re-entering society after incarceration. The law aims to make the transition easier for such individuals.
People who have been released from prisons and jails face many challenges, including limited access to employment, housing, social services, healthcare, and financial institutions. Fortunately, this legislation removes a significant barrier for these individuals, making it easier for them to access these essential services and resources.
Former inmates face a major challenge when it comes to reintegrating into society – the lack of identification. This has been an ongoing issue that has prevented many from securing jobs, housing, and even opening a bank account. The inability to do these things only worsens the economic hardship they face and increases the likelihood of them reoffending.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias urges all counties to partake in this simple yet essential need. By fulfilling this need, we can reduce recidivism, save taxpayer money, and strengthen our communities by breaking cycles of economic hardship and demonstrating our care for one another.
Governor Pritzker’s administration has undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of the criminal justice system in the state, which includes not only the abolition of cash bail but also the simplification of criminal record expungement. This legislation is an integral part of this larger initiative.
