12 to 15 people robbed a UPS truck in the Little Village neighborhood after a viaduct damaged its roof.
According to the police, a mob of at least a dozen people looted a UPS tractor-trailer on Chicago’s Southwest Side on Thursday morning following an accident.
At approximately 10:46 a.m., the truck’s roof was severed while it was attempting to travel under a viaduct in the Little Village neighborhood’s 2100 block of South Kedzie Avenue. This caused a series of unusual occurrences.
The vehicle collided with the viaduct while traveling north on Kedzie Avenue, just past Cermak Road, resulting in substantial damage. Police reported that a group of 12 to 15 individuals took advantage of the opportunity to take packages from the damaged vehicle after it was relocated near the CTA Pink Line station at 21st and Kedzie.
A UPS spokesperson issued a statement stating, “We are cognizant of an incident that transpired this morning involving one of our drivers.” We are assisting the responding authorities in their investigation and respectfully defer to them with any inquiries regarding this incident.
The UPS driver was not injured during the incident; however, the quantity of packages that were stolen is still unclear. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests or citations have been issued.
