Authorities from the Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol were present at Newman Regional Health following an early Friday crash on the Kansas Turnpike.
One of the drivers involved in a crash southwest of Emporia has been arrested. The incident occurred early in the morning.
The accident occurred around 2 am at mile marker 120 northbound on the Kansas Turnpike, approximately seven miles southwest of Emporia. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Oscar Hernandez Lique from Kansas City, Kansas, was operating a pickup truck in the outside lane, driving at low speeds and without any lights on. Subsequently, a semi truck driven by Nicholas L Gonzalez, 28, from Iola collided with Lique’s pickup and caused it to veer off the highway.
Lique suffered what were initially described as minor injuries and was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment. However, he was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at the Lyon County Jail. He is suspected of driving under the influence, possessing unspecified drugs, failing to stop at an accident, and interfering with law enforcement. Formal charges have yet to be filed.
Both Gonzalez and his passenger, Nicholas A. Gonzalez of Iola, emerged unscathed from the incident.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred around 2 am at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 120 northbound, which is approximately seven miles southwest of Emporia. According to troopers, Oscar Hernandez Lique, 37, was driving in the outside lane without any lights on and at a low speed. Subsequently, Nicholas L Gonzalez, a 28-year-old from Iola, collided with Lique’s pickup truck, causing it to veer off the highway.
Lique received medical treatment at Newman Regional Health, while neither Gonzalez nor his passenger, Nicholas A Gonzalez of Iola, sustained any injuries.
