Officials from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have reported that a child is currently recuperating after an alligator attack in Bayou St. John, New Orleans.
On Sunday, July 14, a boy was in the shallow area of the water when an alleged 6-foot alligator attacked him. However, the child’s father acted quickly and was able to free him from the alligator. Fortunately, the boy is expected to make a full recovery. LDWF agents provided this information regarding the incident.
After the incident, an agent from LDWF reported that they remained at the scene and awaited the arrival of a professional nuisance alligator hunter. However, upon the arrival of the hunter, the alligator had already disappeared. In order to locate and eliminate the alligator, the agents have joined forces with the Levee Board.
According to the LDWF agents, they annually capture and remove over 1,000 nuisance alligators with the aim of reducing the risk of human-alligator encounters. These hunters are licensed and trained to carry out this task effectively.
LDWF agents are urging the community to be cautious and alert for the presence of alligators while in Louisiana waterways. It is important to remember that alligators are dangerous predators, and therefore exercising caution is crucial. Additionally, the public is reminded to avoid feeding alligators as it can lead them to associate humans with food.
