Calls for an Iowa aquarium to close down have emerged after it euthanized a shark that had bitten an employee earlier this week.
According to a report by The Des Moines Register, the Villages at Jordan Creek Town Center welcomed the opening of a for-profit aquarium called Blue Zoo in May. Unfortunately, the facility has already seen its second animal death, a shark that had to be euthanized. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed this incident. As a result, the Humane Society of the United States is demanding a thorough investigation and for Blue Zoo to shut down.
On Monday, a team member transporting an 18-inch bamboo shark witnessed an unfortunate incident. The shark, which had previously displayed signs of distress, had been moved into a larger tank and had seemingly recovered. However, it became startled and bit into the team member’s hand, refusing to let go despite multiple attempts to dislodge it. As a result, officials were forced to make the difficult decision to euthanize the shark. The Register reported the incident.
According to The Register, the recent attack has forced the zoo to close down some of its exhibits for the week. Nonetheless, the zoo remains committed to its goal of offering interactive experiences with aquatic animals. Prior to the incident, the USDA had expressed apprehension about the zoo’s treatment and management of its animals.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums does not accredit Blue Zoo, according to the Register. However, the facility reports to both USDA and Iowa Fish and Wildlife. Blue Zoo declined to comment when the Register asked about the number of animal deaths since its opening.
