In February 2019, a woman died during a struggle with the police. However, a federal court has rejected the Indianapolis city government’s request for a new trial.
The family of Elenor Northington received a $500,000 award from the jury.
During a prayer service at a church, Northington was reported to be belligerent, leading to officers restraining her. Tragically, she stopped breathing during the incident.
The lawsuit alleged that the death of the woman was a result of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s use of force.
According to the autopsy report, the cause of death of the 43-year-old individual was a deficiency of oxygen. The Marion County coroner has indicated that the reason for this was due to the individual’s morbid obesity, schizophrenia, and a physical altercation with others.
According to Northington’s family, she was experiencing postpartum depression and was not taking any medication.
