According to Nassau County police, Joseph DeLucia Jr., a 59-year-old mechanic, bought a shotgun legally before committing the crime. He took this drastic step after realizing that he would have to leave the home he had lived in all his life.

According to Detective Captain Steve Fitzpatrick, Joseph Jr. had the perception that he was being left out of the will and would be left without a place to go. It is worth noting that he had previous psychological issues.

Three days prior, DeLucia’s mother passed away, prompting her children and niece to make a journey to Long Island from different states to handle her will.

“When this incident occurred, the group gathered to meet the realtor at the designated location. As they convened in the den area, they made sure to bring Starbucks with them. However, it was noted that Joseph DeLucia Jr. had chosen to stay behind,” Fitzpatrick shared, referring to the four victims.

According to the police, DeLucia expressed fear that he would be excluded from the will and compelled to vacate his lifelong residence.

According to Fitzpatrick, DeLucia was in a state of panic as he realized that he would need to find a new place to live, despite the fact that he was receiving adequate care.

Police in Nassau County were called to the scene of a reported shooting on Wyoming Court in Syosset on Sunday morning just before noon. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man lying on the front lawn of a residence.

A tragic incident unfolded in a wealthy neighborhood in New York, as a grandmother was involved in a murder-suicide, resulting in the death of a college track coach. According to the police, the shocking incident took place recently.

Nassau County police were called to the scene of a reported shooting and found a man lying on the front lawn of a home on Wyoming Court in Syosset, New York. The incident occurred just before noon on Sunday.

“Forty-one years. That was probably one of the most horrific scenes I have ever seen.” — Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder

Residents are being urged by the police to report any suspicious activities they observe about their neighbors. This comes after DeLucia’s neighbors came forward, stating that the gunman had previously warned them, “If you hear gunshots, don’t bother calling the police.”

“We, as a community, are aware of many things. We hear, know, and see various aspects of our surroundings. However, when we choose to remain silent, the consequences can be detrimental, just like what occurred yesterday. Within this community, discussions took place regarding the shooter’s anguish, as he had made the decision to isolate himself following his mother’s passing. There were also previous conversations advising against calling the police if gunshots were heard, as it was believed that by the time they arrived, it would be too late,” Ryder emphasized.

Joseph DeLucia was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard, while the four deceased victims were discovered in the den at the back of the home. Police determined that DeLucia had shot each of the victims multiple times. (FOX 5 New York)

Law enforcement officials find such information “disturbing” as it could have enabled them to respond to the residence more promptly.

According to the police, DeLucia’s shotgun was legally purchased. However, if his disturbing behavior had been reported to the authorities, it might have been illegal for him to possess it.

Fitzpatrick suggested that while it is not certain whether this incident could have been prevented, there is a possibility that it could have been.

According to police, they had received one prior call to DeLucia’s house in 2022 for a welfare check. However, at that time, DeLucia’s behavior did not raise any concerns that would have required further police action.

Mary Macaluso, a local realtor, informed the local newspaper Newsday that she had planned to meet a group of relatives at the address. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the sale of the home following the passing of its owner and the family matriarch.
