A tragic incident occurred in Kansas City, Missouri, where the local police department is currently investigating a devastating two-car collision. Regrettably, this accident resulted in the loss of three lives and left multiple children injured.
Initial reports suggested that two men lost their lives in the crash. However, updated information from the Kansas City Police Department on Wednesday revealed that the tragic incident claimed the lives of three individuals, including at least one minor.
Emergency crews were initially dispatched to a two-car crash at the intersection of E. 35th Street and Norton Avenue at approximately 5 p.m. on August 13th, according to KCPD.
The crash occurred when a KCPD officer pulled over a blue Kia Soul at 31st Street and Cleveland Avenue due to a traffic violation. After the officer exited his car, the Kia quickly accelerated away. The officer chose not to engage in a pursuit and discovered that the license plates on the Kia indicated it was a stolen vehicle.
The Kia quickly accelerated after the traffic stop and caught up to a white Chevrolet Tahoe driving ahead on eastbound 35th Street. As the Chevrolet began to slow down, preparing to make a left turn onto northbound Norton Avenue, the Kia boldly maneuvered into the opposite, westbound lane to overtake it.
The Kia collided with the Chevrolet as it attempted to make a left turn, resulting in the Chevrolet spinning and coming to a stop facing south on Norton Avenue. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening.
The Kia collided with a massive utility pole, causing it to overturn onto its roof. Inside the car were a total of eight individuals:
-
- A 16-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
- A 37-year-old male front passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
- A female passenger was pronounced dead at the hospital.
- A 20-year-old male passenger sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- A 4-year-old sitting on the 20-year-old’s lap sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- A 6-year-old passenger in the middle seat sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- A 12-year-old in the cargo area sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
- A 13-year-old in the cargo area sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The hospital has not provided information about the age of the female passenger who tragically lost her life in the crash. Authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
According to the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD), there were 59 crash fatalities in 2024, which is a slight increase from the 56 fatalities reported during the same period last year.
